Lobaan as sold in the market is a resin of a tree, Styrax Benzoin. It is extracted by making an incision on the stem of the tree; the secreting liquid is collected, dried and sold for usage. Though the trees of Lobaan are found in India, the majority is imported from Thailand, Malaysia and the Islands of the East Indies. Chemical synthesis of Loban reveals that Lobaan contains benzoic acid, cinnamic acid and aniline.

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Jafar رضي الله عنه narrates that Nabiﷺ said “Fumigate your houses with Loban (اللبان) & Al-Sheeh” (الشيح) (cress).[Shoabul Imaan: 5679]

* Lobaan has an appealing, sweet smell resembling vanilla which works as a stimulant to provide relief against depression. It harmonizes the nervous system and instills a sense of calm. When the smell enters the nostrils, the particles directly enter the bloodstream though capillaries within the nose. This brings a swift response to the incense and alleviates the mood.

* Lobaan has a very alluring aroma, which can cover foul odor, making it an excellent deodorant.

* Lobaan functions as an insect repellant. Burning them within homes or in an area which requires purging the insects forces them to evict the area.

* It is known to disinfect the space and keep bacteria and viruses away.
